Public health nutrition is the application of nutrition and public health principles to design programs, systems, policies and environments that aims to improve or maintain the optimal health of populations and targeted groups. Community nutrition encompasses individual and interpersonal-level interventions that create changes in knowledge, attitudes, behavior and health outcomes among individuals, families or small, targeted groups within a community setting.

The terms “public health,” “community health” and “population health” are often used interchangeably with public health being the broadest term with the longest history of use. Population health is a term that is becoming more common, often with a focus on people with shared characteristics such as race or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geography and gender.

Public Health Nutrition (PHN) centers on the advancement of good health through nutrition and the essential prevention of nourishment-related ailment in the population. It is a science that helps in advancing the health status of the country by changing the food nourishment system. It centers around the issue of the dietary necessities of the population. Public health nutrition is the science and craft of forestalling infection, dragging out life, and promoting health through the medium of nutrition. The goal of a public health nutritionist is to enable everyone to achieve greater health and well-being by making healthier food and nutritional choices.

Public health refers to all organized measures (public or private) to prevent disease, promote health, and extend the lifespan of the entire population. Its activities are designed to provide conditions that allow people to stay healthy and focus on the entire population, rather than individual patients or diseases. Therefore, public health is about the whole system, not just eradicating specific diseases.
